About the APF Canada Media Fellowship
The Media Fellowship Program is part of APF Canada’s Research Grants portfolio and is made possible through an endowment from the Government of Canada. Since its launch, the program has supported nearly 100 Canadian journalists, including prominent figures such as Carol Off, John Ivison, and Nathan VanderKlippe.

It is not tied to a university degree program but provides an opportunity for Canadian media professionals to undertake independent, in-depth reporting projects focused on the Asia Pacific region.

Who’s Eligible to Apply?

Work in any medium: print, online, television, or radio
Have at least two years of professional experience in journalism
Show a track record of published or broadcast work in Canadian media
Be eligible for travel visas to the countries they intend to visit for their reporting project
Whether you're on staff at a major outlet or an independent freelancer with a strong portfolio, this fellowship is designed to support meaningful international reporting that connects Canada with the Asia-Pacific region.
Note: Previous recipients are only eligible to reapply after three years.
What Fellows Are Expected to Deliver
If you're selected for the 2025 APF Canada Media Fellowship, you'll have the opportunity and responsibility to share your work with a wide audience. As part of the fellowship, awardees are expected to produce:
At least three original stories, including one tailored specifically for digital platforms
A social media strategy to promote your stories on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook
One multimedia piece this could be a short video, podcast, or blog post reflecting on your experience, which will be published on the APF Canada website
A wrap-up report (700 to 1,000 words) summarizing your project, process, and key insights
Fellows may also be invited to present their findings at APF Canada's offices in Vancouver or Toronto a chance to connect directly with policymakers, scholars and media peers.
How Applications Are Evaluated
Applications are reviewed by a jury appointed by APF Canada. Selections are made based on the following criteria:
