Former Manchester United striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has been fined and issued a formal warning by the Mexican Football Federation following a series of sexist remarks he made on social media.
Now playing for Liga MX club Chivas, the 37-year-old made controversial statements on TikTok, which the federation said promoted "sexist stereotypes." In his comments, Hernandez suggested that women are "failing" and "eradicating masculinity," and added, “Don’t be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man.”
The remarks, made over the past weekend, sparked widespread criticism across Mexico. Among those who condemned the statements was President Claudia Sheinbaum, the country’s first female head of state. “Chicharito is a very talented footballer,” she said, “but when it comes to his views on women, he clearly still has a lot to learn.”
Hernandez’s club, Chivas, responded by stating his comments were "contrary to the principles and values" of the organization. While the club confirmed that "appropriate action" had been taken, they did not disclose any specifics.
A national icon and Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, Hernandez rose to international prominence after signing with Manchester United from Chivas in 2010. During his time at Old Trafford, he won two Premier League titles. He later had spells with Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, and West Ham United, followed by a move to Sevilla and then Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer. He returned to Chivas in 2023 on a two-year contract.
